Recently a couple of the guys here at MTGN were at a business convention in Phoenix. We have begun to offer business consulting to local businesses which include motivational strategies, sales strategies, and more. So we have been attending conventions like this one quite frequently, to meet potential clients, and learn more about local business practices. Though our consulting business has not taken off yet, we have made some great connections and really expanded our horizon. While in Phoenix we talked to a couple local contractors and business owners, and one in particular deserves some spotlight. His name was Scott and he was with the company Pool Remodel Phoenix, and let me tell you this gentleman had some words of wisdom, so we thought we would share some with you.
Being in the pool remodel industry for over a decade Scott had the experience needed to do a great job, but more than that he had the attitude. After talking with Scott for well over an hour his positive attitude began rubbing off on all of us, it was truly contagious. When asked how he had such a positive attitude, he simply replied back, “why not have a positive attitude?” I think that answer kind of perplexed all of us, because it was so simple. He said further, “every day you wake up you get the choice of how your day is going to go, either good or bad, and you get to choose. Sure there are going to be obstacles that present themselves, but it does not mean it needs to sabotage your good day, it simply becomes an obstacle you overcame during your good day, which makes your day even better.”
At first I think we judged Scott a little bit, but as the sincerity of what he was saying continued to show through, we all began taking notes. Scott told us how his company had successfully remolded more pools in a week than most companies did in a month. When we asked how, he said “because we did.” Scott elaborated on how the company has the practice of over committing, meaning they take on more work than they can handle. Which initially seemed a little haphazard to me and the guys. But Scott explained how not once have they been behind schedule on a project, and in fact this over committing made them more productive, more timely, and they actually performed better jobs.
Scott explained this by saying “we always short changed ourselves. We always believed it was possible to do only x amount of jobs per week, when in reality we can handle almost twice that. Its funny how your mind can limit you, and make you believe your only capable of so much. When in reality your capable of far greater. By recognizing how far we can push ourselves, we learned what we were capable of, both as a company and as individuals. We learned to work together better and we started getting a ton of recognition from customers and other pool companies about our outstanding work.”
Scott later told us that him and his team start every morning with their goals. They write individual goals that they want to complete at home or on their free time, and then they write group goals that they want to achieve as a company. By doing this Scott said that they had a clear vision of the day ahead of them, and had a point of reference to gauge how much they accomplished for the day and what percentage of their goals they hit. He said however the real magic for the company was writing their long term goals. By writing down meaningful long term goals for the company that were grand and challenging, the crew had something to strive for. Scott said that the long term goal for the company is to be the best and biggest pool remodel company in Phoenix and throughout Arizona.
Scott realizes they have a long way to go, but by having everyone on the same page and holding the same vision for the company, they have made great improvements. “Everyone comes into the office every morning with excitement and vigor because they know they are working for Phoenix’s future #1 pool remodel company. By knowing this, we maintain the behaviors and habits of Arizona’s #1 pool remodel company, and our actions line up with where we need to be. It’s simple, but it’s so powerful,” Scott explained.
Scott said he has two kids at home, and ever since experiencing such success with goal setting, he has started to do it with his kids. Though they are only 8 and 10, they start every day with their goals. He said “right now all the goals center around playing sports, but as they get older we will develop them further.” I know Scott is in the pool remodel business, but after talking with him its evident that he has wild potential to be successful in any industry based on how he approaches the day. Goal setting is something we will elaborate on further in the future, but we believe this was a shining example that needed to be shared with you guys here at MTGN sooner than later.
When it comes to goal setting I think we can all learn something from Scott and the experience him and and his team are having at Phoenix Pool Remodel. Business is very demanding these days and if you don’t have a vision for the future of your business, things can crumble around you quickly. Goals are the first ingredient and possibly the most important ingredient that goes into manifesting your dreams. Without them, you lack the ambition to take on the obstacles that are between you and your dreams. Take one from Scott and make those goals big…Real Big!
Thanks for taking the time to hear about Scott and the powerful experience him and all the guys at Pool Remodel Phoenix are having with goal setting. Look out for new developments as we talk to more businesses and get more insight into what it takes to run a successful business. Cheers!
